Our beautiful little store is packed with wonderful reading material.

Unfortunately this makes it a poor environment to promote social distancing.

Therefore we are closing the store to browsing.

But don’t worry. You may still order comics and books so you will have the good stuff to read while you self isolate.

Just give us a call at 250-388-3696.

Or email legendscomics@shaw.ca.

We will take your order and arrange a time when you can come pick it up at the door.

We also offer delivery to your door in our area.

And we can mail your order to you.

Please consider giving a credit card number at the time of the order as this will speed up your visit. At this time we prefer not to handle cash.

We hope all our customers are able to stay healthy in these perilous times. We recommend that you follow all measures of protection as advised by the health experts which is why we are taking these measures to keep Legends a safe place.

Be well!

Local artist Joan Steacy launches graphic memoir at Legends Comics

steacycover300dpi-728x1024On September 7, 2019, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, Victoria-based artist Joan Steacy will celebrate her new graphic novel, Aurora Borealice, with an event at Legends Comics & Books.

Aurora Borealice is the story of Steacy’s lifelong quest for education. Through her work on this project, Steacy explored her personal journey through alter-ego Alice, a functional illiterate with a creative mind and an astonishing amount of artistic skill.

The story follows Alice as she winds her way through art college, marriage, an art career in Toronto, parenthood, and a move to Victoria. Along the way, she draws encouragement from her partner, Canadian comics artist Ken Steacy, insight from media theorist Marshall McLuhan and mentor Eric McLuhan, and inspiration from Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud, and Jack ‘King’ Kirby.

Since its release, Aurora Borealice has received glowing praise from a number of prominent reviewers. The London Free Press began its review with, “Joan Steacy’s Aurora Borealice is pretty much the perfect comic book,” while Prism Magazine calls it, “A beautiful and effective literary reality.” The book was also featured on CBC’s spring list of “10 Canadian comics to read right now.”

Joan Steacy is a visual artist who has worked in a variety of disciplines, including sculpture, illustration, and digital painting. A graduate of Sheridan College, The Ontario College of Art & Design, and The University of Victoria, she currently teaches at Camosun College in Comics and Graphic Novels, a program she co-created with partner Ken Steacy.

Hope Nicholson was Associate Producer of the documentary LOST HEROES, currently on the CBC Documentary Channel. The film is a history of Canadian comic books and their creators from the 1940’s to today. Hope further archived the early era of the “Canadian Whites” by editing and publishing hardcover collections of the classic Canadian Comics “Nelvana of the Northern Lights” and “Brok Windsor.” Her next reprint collection is “Fashion In Action”, the famous 1980s comic.

As owner of the Winnipeg based publisher Bedside Press, Hope focuses on niche comic and sci-fi/fantasy books, including the indigenous comics anthology “Moonshot,” and “Love Beyond Body, Space, and Time” (Summer 2016) a prose anthology of indigenous LGBT sci-fi stories

ROAD NARROWS AS YOU GOOn Authors for Indies Day, Canadian authors show appreciation for independent bookstores by volunteering as guest booksellers.

This year on April 30, authors will be chatting with customers, recommending books, and helping everyone appreciate the importance of indie bookstores to our communities and our cultural lives.
LEGENDS will be hosting LEE HENDERSON.

LEE has published two award-winning books with Penguin Canada — the story collection The Broken Record Technique and the novel The Man Game, which won the BC Book Prize and the Vancouver Book Prize in 2009. Regularly published in The Walrus and Border Crossings magazine, LEE has ALSO curated exhibitions of contemporary art and experimental music.

His most recent novel is THE ROAD NARROWS AS YOU GO, the story of Wendy Ashbubble who travels from B.C. to San Francisco in the 1980’s to join the underground comix scene. LEE himself draws her comic STRAYS, excerpted throughout the novel. Sean Rogers wrote in The Globe and Mail “Henderson has contributed his own, outsized, rambunctious myth to the annals of comics, and of our literature.”

LEE is an Associate Professor and Director of Professional Writing Minor in the Writing Department at the University of Victoria. He teaches a class in writing comics.

LEE is a great consumer and raconteur of comics and is sure to enhance this celebration of the people who bring you the books you love to read.
